Linnet on a wire

Europe's not blessed with anywhere near the amount of brightly coloured birds as other parts of the world. Which makes the Linnet (Carduelis cannabina) one of our favourites.

This one is a male, spotted near the fishing village of Psarades in Prespa, Greece. They breed or are permanent residents in pretty much all of Europe, but like so many others, their numbers are dropping. The RSPB notes that "the UK population [is] estimated to have declined by 57 per cent between 1970 and 2008"
