The photo above shows a normal January in the village of Agios Germanos. And what would be a normal February and March. Not this year! Below is a photo from late January of the Great Prespa Lake, looking back towards Agios Germanos, where snow remains only above 1,600m asl.
And then today. Lake Lesser Prespa is looking as beautiful as ever above, but there's only now snow on the very tops of the mountains. Snow isn't just pretty. Months of snow create a huge water reservoir on the mountains. When this gradually melts from March to May it fills the springs with our drinking water and tops up the lakes after the previous hot summer. What will happen without it?
