A squatting squacco

May 3, 2016

The squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides) is back, having returned from Africa to breed in the marshy wetlands of Prespa and other parts of Southern Europe and the Middle East.

It's unusual English name comes from the Italian 'sguacco', which by 1752 had changed to squacco.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squacco_heron)

And it looks quite different in flight, with its white wings dominating its appearance from a distance.
