September birds

September 8, 2016

Many of the region's well known birds have headed south for winter. But we're lucky to have some hangers on, as well as some lovely resident species.  Here's a selection of some September highlights.

This juvenille Dalmatian pelican shouldn't be so close to the camera (Pelecanus crispus). A great photo, but something's wrong. Not flying away means he's probably injured. Since the photographer took this, he's been rescued and sent to a vets for checks.

Lesser whitethroats (Sylvia curruca) won't be with us much longer, as they'll fly south to Africa for winter. Our friend did well to get this shot in September.

The chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) is a common bird throughout Europe

White-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus) are resident in Prespa and can be seen all year round. This one was taken near the river mouth of the Ayios Yermanos river.
